!!! Warning !!! SPOILER Alert !!!
Come away, oh, human child,
to the waters and the wild
with a fairy, hand in hand,
for the world’s more full of weeping
than you can understand.
Ben: “She’s singing her song so that she can send all the fairies home across the sea. And look, look, she’s turning into a seal.”
Bronach: “This is an ancient shell that my mother gave me a long time ago. Hold it to your ear and listen carefully. You’ll hear the song of the sea. You’re going to be the best big brother in the world.”
A few years later…
Ben: “Did you ever hear of Macha the Owl Witch? Well, she’s evil. You know the island out at sea? It’s called Mac Lir. It’s called that because it’s not an island at all, it’s a huge giant. Macha’s owls took all the giant’s feelings and turned him to stone. And do you know the worst of it? She was his mother! He was her first victim and she hasn’t stopped since.
Ben: “To this day, all the fairies are afraid to come out on Halloween night because if they do, Macha’s owls will find them and take their feelings and turn them to stone.”
Saoirse is curious with the ancient shell. She tries to play it and then there are lights guiding her to the place she belongs. Turns out she is the selkie that Ben and mom had been talking about.
Conor: “I can’t lose her, too, Bronach.”
Macha the Owl Witch takes Saoirse hostage. She wants to turn Saoirse to stone like other fairies. Ben, together with his dog Cu, saves Saoirse from Macha, but it’s too late. Macha has already half turned Saoirse to stone. Actually, Macha is not evil. Because she lost so many of her emotions, she is no longer able to differ the good or the bad. Ben figures out how to turn Saoirse back to normal. He wants Saoirse to play the ancient shell in order to free the trapped souls in the jars. The jars are destroyed and all of Macha’s emotions are back to her, and she is back to who she once was, the Good Macha. Saoirse has to sing so that she can send all the fairies home across the sea, but she doesn’t have much time. She needs her coat. With help from Macha, they can come home faster, but the coat is no longer there.
Ben asks dad where the coat is, but he is ignored. Seeing Saoirse so pale, dad wants to take her to the hospital. Ben wants to explain everything, how to save Saoirse, but dad doesn’t want to listen. Out of anger, dad tells Ben that he threw the coat. Ben has no choice. He jumps into the sea to look for the coat. Saoirse turns into a selkie. Ben teaches her how to sing just like how mom taught him, and then she begins to sing.
Between the here, between the now.
Between the north, between the south.
I am a selkie, a selkie of the sea.
All truths will never bear the promise of old.
Mom comes back to take Saoirse with her.
Bronach: “All of my kind must leave tonight. But, Saoirse, you are part human. If I take her coat, our worlds will be untangled.”
Bronach: “My son. Remember me, in your stories and in your songs. Know that I will always love you. Always.”
I can’t stop crying from the start until the very end of the film. The animation is simple yet full of art. The story is very beautiful. I am sorry, the recaps is still lacking. I am no expert, but I can tell you that this film is great. You have to watch it. :)
